Hey there! Can you believe August is here? And I couldn’t resist the pun of “picking you up” and the giveaway being a tote bag. You know, you pick stuff up and carry it in the tote. Okay, I’m a nerd. We all know it now. LOL And yet, we’re still friends.
I love reading your comments in the blog. I do try to answer every single one because your words are important to me. And thank you so much for those who drop me a note via email and let me know what’s going on in your world. I like hearing the laughs and the tears that make up life. And as Eloisa James told me, “Romance teaches us about life.”
Please help me spread the word about LETTERS from Linda and invite your friends to sign up, right here at my website.
The August newsletter is about to be sent out. I can’t wait to read all of your comments for August.
I’m very excited about this month’s giveaway. I love surprises. Do you? If you’re a newsletter subscriber, then you know where to find the instructions about how to win this brand new Samsonite tote bag and seven other surprise items. It will be like Christmas comes to you. Only in August. Well, September because that’s when the winner is announced. But you know that already because you’re a faithful subscriber.
And see the puppy in the picture? He was a gift from Susan Jackson. I’ve been calling him Puppy. She refers to him as Puppy. But I think it’s time he gets a name–maybe that will be the game for the giveaway for September.
I’m so enjoying The Summer Girls by Mary Alice Monroe. I’m on the third and final book of the trilogy. And as we are moving to the end of summer, so is the book. I can’t wait to find out what Dora, Carson, and Harper have in store for their darling grandmother.
Thank you for your continued support.
And stay tuned for more news about Christmas in Jubilee.
Happy Reading,
Linda Joyce

The is a cute puppy. I love the bad. It’s so nice you want to give it a name.
Adorable puppy.
I love Jane Austen. My favorite quote from Pride and Prejudice is from Mr. Darcy “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” One only dreams that some hot guy can come and tell you this line and you will fall over heels in love. I love romance and who doesn’t love Mr. Darcy.
Yaritza,
Fabulous quote! I love all Jane Austen. Even the modern movies that are a take off on her stories.
You must allow me to thank you for sharing this.

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”
Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land
I read this in the 60s and thought it was the best definition of love that I had seen and never forgot it.
Linda,
This quote really resonates with me. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Smiles,
Linda Joyce
My favorite quote is “You are, and always have been, my dream” Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.
My favorite quote from Louisa May Alcott’s, “Little Women” solidified my belief in what path I should take early on in my life. Though, I didn’t follow that path initially, I rediscovered the earlier laid breadcrumbs and am finding my way back.
“I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle–something heroic, or wonderful–that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don’t know what, but I’m on the watch for it, and mean to astonish you all, some day. I think I shall write books, and get rich and famous; that would suit me, so that is my favorite dream.”
-Jo March
Shelby,
Great quote! Little Women is one of my favorite books. I received a copy for Christmas when I was about eight or nine. The book was published before I was born. It was my first look into a “historical” point of view. Because my father was in the Air Force and we moved around a lot, I didn’t get to keep many of the books I was given as a child. Little Women is only one of three I have, dating before I was 10.

Cute pup.

Thank you. He’s very dear to me.

“Just remember: If one bird carried every grain of sand, grain by grain, across the ocean, by the time he got them all on the other side, that would only be the beginning of eternity.” In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (One of my favorite lines from a book.)
My favorite quote is from My Familiar Stranger by Victoria Danann. “So I asked to see his fangs and he showed me. Then I gave him wood.” This made me laugh so hard I woke up my hubby at 1 in the morning. It’s one of those things where you would need to read it to understand.
Bobbi,
I’m intrigued by your quote. The book you mention, it’s not my go-to genre, but I’ll put it on my to-be-read list.
I don’t know if the fanged one is a shifter or an animal or even the un-dead, but it reminded of me of when I saw Dracula on Broadway in New York. It was delightfully scary. And the man who played Dracula–I would’ve have given him access to my neck–he was ALL that and more. LOL
Smiles,
Linda
There are so many quotes in books that I’ve love but this one is one of my favorites. It’s from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
“We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
Morgan,
J.K. Rowling did an excellent twist on a cliche. She took “United we stand, divided we fall” and made it her own. Certainly a hallmark of good writing.
And I did a bit of research on the original phrase. Evidently, it dates back to to the Greek story teller Aesop in 6th century B.C. Such an interesting quote.

I have so many book quotes that resonate with me. One of my all time favourites is:
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” ― Dr. Seuss
from Horton Hears a Who!
Mary,
That’s a great quote. The first book I ever learned to read was Go Dog Go! Thank goodness for Dr. Seuss!
Smiles,
Linda
That looks like a comfy couch to read, accompanied by that cute puppy!! 🙂
I love the quote from Erich Segal’s “Love Story,” Love means never having to say you’re sorry.
Just hearing that line could get me tearing up. Because… sigh. That’s a sad love story, wasn’t it.
Didi,
I probably do more writing there than reading. 🙂 It’s my magic chair. When I’m working on creating new pages for a story, that’s where I sit. I actually read mostly in bed before I go to sleep. And I do have a desk–that’s where I work. LOL sounds a bit strange, but I consider editing and emails and all the other stuff I have to do to be the serious work done at a desk.
I recently happened to catch the last half of Love Story on TV. I cried while I was folding clothes. In the middle of the day.
Thanks for sharing the quote.
Smiles,
Linda
it’s not a quote, but I love these two sentences from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J.Maas:
One heartbeat,I was staring after him—
the next, I had my shoe in a hand.
I hurled it at him with all my strength.
I find it really funny
Susanti,
I’ll have to check out the book. I think the “heartbeat” in my romantic mind suggests attraction, but then she throws her shoe at him…but you know they say that love and hate are NOT opposite emotions. 🙂
Thank you for sharing.

“However small the chance might be of striking lucky, the chance was there.”
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Jeana,
I can’t tell you what a delight it was for me when I discovered the book of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I was a kid. What a great quote you’ve shared. The book, the quote, truly helped me understand the concept of hope.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Smiles,
Linda
I live this quote from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens: I did really cry in good earnest when I went to bed, to think that my expectations had done some good to somebody.
Deborah,
Very nice quote! Thanks for sharing. It’s one that will make everyone think…about expectations and doing good to others.
Smiles,
Linda
The most poignant first sentence is from The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, “In the town there were two mutes, and they were always together.”
Of course, they were always together, because they were probably ostracized by the town. I taught Psychology for thirty one years, and this sentence tells the reader volumes about the characters and the story to come.
Jackie,
What an interesting quote. And I agree, it tells so much about the characters.
Thank you for sharing the quote with us.

The most important virtue to succeed in life is self-control. Laws of Success by Napoleon Hill.
Krishnan,
I’m not familiar with Napoleon Hill. I’ll look him up. Thanks for joining in the fun and leaving a quote.

Howdy Miss Linda. Been busy doing mediations for our County Auditor about the tax value of people’s homes and it is so rewarding to be able to help them get their value better to fit the condition of their home. Still looking to move to a ranch up around where are families are (northeastern Ohio) and get rid of this bi-level with all the steps I can’t seem to handle. Interesting weather today–cloudy but bight and only 81 degrees at 2 PM. Hope all is well with you and that knowing we are out here thinking good thoughts of you will “pick you up”!
Miss Shirley,
I understand about steps. My friend, neighbor, and author Rachel Jones is moving for that same reason–no steps. I used to have my office upstairs, thusly, I ran up and down the stairs at least 10 times a day. That was my exercise. Now, I have to get out and walk… My body likes it. My brain does not.
Thank you for thinking good thoughts for me. Hugs.
All my best,
Linda
“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.” Horseradish by Lemony Snicket.
Cassandra,
Love the quote! A few years back, my niece introduced me to Lemony Snicket. 🙂

Who doesn’t love a cute puppy! 😀
I love the pink bag, and surprises are always nice. Enjoy the rest of your Summer. 😀
Ruza,
The puppy is very dear to me. When he was first given to me, he made me cry because he reminded me so much of General Beauregard, the last of our 3 dogs to pass away in January. But, grief is lighter now. I love seeing the puppy in my chair.

I’m scared. I’m scared. I’m scared. I’m scared. From Strangers by Dean Koontz is what sticks out. Actually Watchers by Dean Koontz is my favorite book ever written. The best.
Thank you Linda!
Lori,
Love this!
The repeated phrase of “I’m scared” is a wonderful use of a rhetorical device called Epistrophe. I’ve been studing rhetorical devices this year and really trying to up my writing with things like this. Since you like Dean Koontz, do you also read Harlan Corban?
Smiles,
Linda
“Don’t cry because it is over. Smile because it happened!” Dr. Seuss
Susan,
Great quote! Thank you for sharing.

“The only quiet woman is a dead woman. ” Sylvia Plath
I don’t really believe this, it just jumped out at me! Thanks for the chance
Burma,
I’ve not heard that quote before. Thanks for sharing. And I would believe the quote if it had come from a man. LOL

I love to read and devour books and can remember plot…characters and story lines for many YEARS but I can never remember quotes…books, movies…nada….So leaving my favorite quote is impossible…but I did want to let you know I am here 🙂
Jo Ann,
It’s ALWAYS nice to hear from you. 🙂
Quick, grab a book and find a line you like.
And with your wild ride, relocation, and revelry in New York–you’ve had a lot on your plate.

Laugh until your belly hurts – Winnie the Pooh
Gina,
I love Winnie the Pooh! Great quote.
Did you know that I’ve seen the statue of the true original Winnie? Do you know why his name is Winnie? It’s because he came from Winnipeg, Ontario. He was the mascot for a group of Canadian pilots sent to London during WWI.

One of my favorite quotes if from The adventures of Thelma thistle by Joyce Crawford. My favorite quote is “ Thelma loved to spend time with her mother. They would laugh and play and share happy times together. They were good friends most of the time. Sometime her mother said no, Thelma that is not good for little thistles” I like this quote because I do a lot of things with my mom and sometimes even though I’m an adult she still has to tell me no sometimes. But I still love her .
Lisa,
I don’t think we’re ever to old to have someone who loves us tell us “no” or at least caution us about a decision we’re making. And I know you love your mom. 🙂
Smiles,
Linda
I love that puppy!
That puppy is so cute!

I’m so sorry it’s a long one it’s from Jane Austen’s Persuasion and it’s my favorite, it’s the letter from Wentworth to Anne.
“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in
F. W.
I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father’s house this evening or never.
Christina,
Thank you for sharing. <3 It's a lovely quote. A heart-pouring of emotion.
