Writing is a unique world. I do it mostly in isolation. I used to listen to music, but even that influences my mood, which may or may not be beneficial to my writing. Thus, silence is usually the loudest thing I hear.
When I’m involved and in the flow of fiction, it’s as though I’m in a different world and a barking dog, a chiming doorbell, a ringing phone in the real world make my blood pressure rise in an instant. I prefer to stay immersed in the fictional places I go until I need to surface…for example when my stomach complains because I forgot to eat lunch.
I see characters all around me. If my gaze remains too long at you when we’re in the grocery store, or pumping gas, or passing in the craft store, it’s because there’s something about you that intrigues me and I’m memorizing that characteristic to capture it in one of my books.
